I stayed at the Melia Cayo Guillermo
almost 1.5 years ago. The place itself was beautiful, everything
was hand painted, and the rooms were nicely decorated. I thought
this resort was going to be great when I got there. Only after
2 days I realized that I wish I had never went.
Our room was not cleaned everyday. I would say
about 4 of the 7 days we were there the cleaning staff actually
made our beds and gave us new towels or just gave us new towels.
The bar fridge was never stocked up with water and juice after
the next day even though we had made requests for that to be done.
I had to ask the front desk 3 times before I even got toilet paper
delivered to my room.
The buffet was the same food everyday and when
one of the dishes ran out, it took a long time for new fresh food
to come out. There were only 2 kinds of fruit and maybe 2 desserts.
There were big line ups at every bar during the day and right
after dinner. It always took us at least 15 min. to get a drink.
Some of the staff there were not very nice, even after you gave
them a tip. There was never any room to lay by the pool because
all of the lounge chairs were taken. Even the ones on the beach
were always taken. The service in the dinning area was lousy as
well. The staff would never come to refill our drinks or ask us
if we needed anything.
One day some important figure in Cuba came to
visit the resort (I am not sure who). When this person was at
the resort, there was an abundance of food at the buffet that
was piping hot and when a dish ran out it was refilled in less
than 2 min. There were tons of different kinds of fruit and desserts
that we had never seen before and the staff was extra polite and
courteous. They were quick to serve us and refill our drinks.
But when this important person left the resort later that night,
everything went back to the same old lousy service we had been
experiencing all week.
So this resort does have the potential to be great
but for some reason they are not trying hard enough. If it wasn't
for some of the nice people we met who worked at the resort, our
time there wouldn't have been worth going.
To top things off we had to check out of our rooms at 11am but
our flight didn't leave until 12:30 that night. Everyone was left
stranded in the lobby with no room and no luggage because they
had locked that stuff away. The resort gave us a couple of rooms
to take a shower in and freshen up. You were allowed about 20
min. to shower. I went into one of these rooms and took a 5 min.
shower and when I was done I got a phone call by the front desk
asking me to leave the room even though I hadn't even been in
there for more than 10 min. I told her that I just got there and
she still asked me to leave. To make matters worse, a man walked
in while I was in my towel claiming that he had a key and it was
his turn to use the room. Apparently the front desk gave him a
key even though they also gave me one too.
By this time I was pretty furious. Not only was
he whole week lousy, but then a stranger almost walked in on my
naked. I went to the front desk to ask what the heck was going
on and the two guys there giggled when I told them the story even
though they could see I was upset. I was not the only person who
was fed up with the resort by the end of the week. I saw many
people at the front desk get yelled at by a lot of people. This
resort shouldn't be labelled 5 stars. I've been to a 3 star in
Dominican and my time there was 100% better than my time at Melia
Cayo Guillermo.
I wrote a huge letter like this one to the president
of Melia and no one has even answered. No letter, nothing. I will
never ever go to this resort or any Melia chain again. If you
had a good service while you were there you were lucky.

Hi there,
My name is Tina and I recently vacationed with my fiancee, Rob
at the Melia Cayo Guillermo Resort.
We felt the need to write to you and let you and your readers
know that this hotel was fabulous!
We departed from Toronto, Ontario on April 8, 2001 and arrived
in sunny Cuba 3 hours later.
We have nothing but wonderful things to say about this resort.
I must admit, after reading some of the letters posted on this
website that I was
apprehensive about staying at this resort. However, to my
surprise...this was a truly remarkable hotel.
The people in the resort are the friendliest people I have ever
met. They really go out of their way
to make your stay enjoyable. The food was great too!
I am a picky eater, so for me to say that the food was great is
saying a lot.
I especially loved the Italian Restaurant where you can enjoy
homemade pasta and personal hot oven pizza's.
The rooms were very clean and we had an ocean view room.
Most of the rooms are ocean view, with the exception of
the ground level rooms.
The water was the aqua-maroon colour that we hoped it would be
and the sand was powder white.
The beach was cleaned every morning for debris and sprayed for
bugs too!
We took a short trip to Pilar Beach (which is absolute Paradise)
and swam with dozens of tropical fish.
There is horseback riding, scuba diving, a hair salon to get your
hair braided and private beach
huts that offer 1 hour full body massages for $15!!! This
is a must!
I have to admit that my trip was made even more special when my
boyfriend Rob proposed to me on the entertainment stage in front
of about 250 people!
If we hadn't already met all the people staying at the resort...we
had after that night!
It was just the icing on the cake of a most fabulous vacation.
Rob & I have always said that
we would never vacation to the same spot more than once, but after
such a great time we have now agreed that we will visit the Melia
Cayo Guillermo again.
Thanks to all of you who shared our special day and who made this
the vacation a trip we will never forget! xoxo

Hi There,
Just wanted to drop you a note and let you know about our recent
trip to the resort.
We stayed at the resort from April 1st/8th, 2001.
I am happy to tell you that the resort is completely finished
and as far as we were concerned the place is looking great.
The staff were very friendly and always willing to help if you
had any questions or concerns.
The food was fine and the selection varied.
The entertainment was very well done, considering the staff are
there from early
morning untill the nightly shows are finished. While we were there
we
celibrated our 26th wedding aniversary and the staff assisted
me in
obtaining flowers and sent a bottle of champaigne to our room.
We became
friends with one of the staff in customer relations and she is
coming to
visit us next February.
This was our second time in Cuba, the previous visit was in Varadero.
We have also been to several other islands in the Caribean and
I would recomend
this resort to anyone. It was one of the best resorts we have
been to. If
you are looking for a nice place to visit, friendly people and
a good time
away, this is the place.
Yours,
Jim and Anne.

Hi!
My boyfriend and I recently returned from our vacation
to Melia Cayo Guillermo. I have one word to describe it...perfect.
Cuba is the most beautiful place I have
ever seen, and
this resort is amazing. It is a very big resort, so
you never feel like you need to leave it to do
something else. The beach is gorgeous and so white,
and the water is the most beautiful colour of blue.
ACTIVITIES
There are many activities going on during the day such
as aerobics, games, dancing lessons, snorkelling,
paddleboats, kayaking, windsurfing, and scuba diving
in the pool. Every night there is a show, and they are
very entertaining and fun.
My boyfriend and I did dancing lessons, we went on a paddleboat,
and we also played pool volleyball with vacationers and the people
who work there. We were never bored, and were even happy just
sitting by the pool because there were always people to meet and
talk to. We also went on the "train" to Playa Pilar, which is
an even more beautiful beach on a different part of the island.
We were given a packed lunch, and my boyfriend went on a catamaran
and went snorkelling. This is included in the cost and we would
definitely recommend it.
FOOD
We were a little nervous about how the food was going
to be because we had heard some bad stories about
people getting sick or that the food was just plain
gross. This was definitely not the case at this
resort. The food was amazing and there was so much of
it! Breakfast and dinner were buffets, but there was
always something different every day. The waiters were
always right there filling up your glass with wine or
orange juice (which is so good), and they were so
friendly. We made friends with one of the waiters who
we had exchanged addresses with.
The food at the restaurants was also really good,
especially the International restaurant. We did not
have to wait in any sort of line to make reservations
for the restaurants.
ROOM
The room was very cozy and cute - very tropical
looking. Our housekeeper was great and our room was
always spotless. The view from our balcony was
beautiful, lots of palm trees and the sea.
STAFF
The people who work at Melia Cayo Guillermo are so
incredibly nice and generous - they treated us like
royalty. We made friends with one of the waiters, one
of the bartenders, and one of the entertainers who
took us to a small Cuban club one night. When our
vacation was over, we felt as though we were leaving
our friends. We hope to keep in touch with them.
We can honestly say that we have nothing but good
things to say about this resort. We had the most
perfect time, and I can't imagine vacationing anywhere
else but Melia Cayo Guillermo. It's hard to imagine
that any other resort could possibly top this one. I
would just love to visit Melia Cayo Guillermo again!!!
Sincerely,
Amy and Mario

This was my first trip
to Cuba and I have never felt heat like this anywhere
else!!! I travelled with 4 of my girlfriends and we stayed at
the Melia
Cayo Guillermo from March 23, 2001 to March 30th, 2001. Overall,
we had a
great trip, however there are both good and not-so-good things
about the
resort.
The grounds:
The layout of the resort is quite
beautiful. It is very well landscaped,
has nice flowers, has a great pool, and also has some nice gazebos
with
swinging chairs.
The rooms:
I would not give the rooms a 5 star
rating. I would say probably closer to
a 3 ½. I found the decor to be kind of strange. The walls
were a pale blue
with star fish and shells painted around the edge of the ceiling-
a little
overdone. I thought the curtains were kind of ugly as well. I
also didn't
like the fact that the bed lamps had florescent lighting- however,
it is
evident that power levels in cuba are low, so I'm sure this is
a way of
conserving energy (we never had a power outtage). The water was
never very
hot, but warm enough to take a shower. The view from our 3rd floor
room,
however, was fantastic!!! We could see the ocean and palm trees
from our
deck.
The food:
I really enjoyed the food. There
were 3 restaurants (italian,
international, beach grill) and a buffet. The buffet served a
lot of
seafood, so if you are like me, you will enjoy it!! I had lobster
one day,
grilled salmon another day, and all kinds of other fish. At dinner
time,
there is both a pizza and pasta bar. The pasta bar is incredible
(if you
are willing to wait)! Cuba also has the best ice cream I have
ever eaten.
Every morning, there is also freshly squeezed orange juice, the
best I have
ever had!
The restaurants were all pretty good
as well. HOWEVER, in order to make
reservations for the italian and international restaurants, you
have to wait
in line a LONG time. We had to wait over 1 ½ hours to make
reservations.
Hopefully this system will change because many guests were frustrated
over
the wait. At both the restaurants and buffet, I really enjoyed
the live
music. Every night musicians would walk around and sing/play for
the
patrons. It was very nice.
The beach:
The beach itself if long, but not
very wide. When the tide comes up, there
is not a whole lot of room for walking. Once the tide goes out,
there is
plenty of room. The water is extremely clear and warm. I swam
in the ocean
about twice a day (for long periods of time) because it was so
nice. Once
thing I did not like is the fact that out in the ocean, there
is some kind
of oil tower. It does not affect the water or the air, but I thought
it
was kind of ugly (it ruined the serenity of the place a bit).
We would
always walk to a part of the beach where you could not see it.
It did not
bother some people at all, but I just didn't like the fact that
it was
there.
The entertainment:
I really enjoyed the entertainment.
The hotel has a special covered area
just for the evening entertainment. Every night the show was different,
and
almost always entertaining. The "disco" is also right next door
to the
entertainment and is a good place to get your drinks before sitting
down to
the entertainment. The disco is open until 2 am, and the drinks
are
included. It is a very small, but nice disco. For anyone who enjoys
dancing, you can take dancing lessons in the afternoon, then practice
them
at night in the disco!
The staff:
The staff were always extremely friendly
and courteous. Cubans have a very
laid back approach, and sometimes your service may be a little
slower than
your are used to, but it is always delivered with a smile!
Overall:
I very much enjoyed my trip, but
I would not say it was perfect. This
resort is definitely more suited for couples.

Hello there! I just came
across your website just as I returned from the most amazing vacation
I have truly ever been on, a vacation to the Melia Cayo Guillermo.
My name is Kristy age 20 and this vacation was a Christmas gift
to me and my boyfriend Brad also age 20.
This hotel was everything the pictures show and more.
We arrived there on Dec.11th and was warmly welcomed to the hotel
by having drinks severed to us as we waiting in line to check
in. We were amazed at our room, the design and colours were really
funky and tropical. The food in the 3 restaurants were delicious,
and that was very impressive cause you usually hear people reporting
back that the food wasn't all that good, but not that case here.
We took part in the dance lessons they offered and also went paddleboating
and windsurfing.
I enjoyed the nightly shows they would put on, and after we would
retreat to the Disco for some
drinks and some dancing. the 24hr bar became a total convenience
to us.
The friendliness from all the staff was exceptional, we even became
close friends with one of the bartenders
who we exchanged addresses with to stay in contact.
I would defiantly recommend this resort to anyone looking for
a good relaxing vacation and for the good price we paid it exceeded
our expectations.
We also have some pics that we took, if you would like some of
them please write me back and let me know.
Thanks~ Kristy&Brad

We came back from the Melia couple
of weeks ago, and we had a wonderful time.
We've stayed at Melia's before and we love the chain because of
the food and variety of drinks that you can get.
The staff was all very experienced since they all worked at other
Sol Melia hotels before in Cayo Coco.
We were greeted by the manager and staff into a big welcoming
party.
The rooms we found to be very clean and very unique.
The food was very good, they had lobsters, fish, different meats
and a great variety of salads, pastas etc.
The beach is white sand and very quiet. It's a perfect place
to relax!!
The best part of the vacation was the staff, they were all wonderful
and made our vacation unforgettable.
We had fun at all times and were involved in many sports, dance
lessons and activities.
The staff is extremely friendly!!!
The only little complaint we would have is that the resort was
not 100% finished. Some rooms were not ready yet, but you
can request that they switch you if you are not satisfied .
I would say it would be 100% safe and done in about a month from
now.
Overall, we had a wonderful time and a great vacation,
we would recommend it to everyone that wants a very relaxing vacations
but at the same time have lot of fun.
